Lazy Summer Days


There are no pictures this week for some odd reason. Guess I have just been busy with other projects. We are getting geared up for our CRMI Fall Conferences. Yes, plural. We re having new Chaplain conferences in both Texas and Arizona this year. Caring Resources Ministries International is an amazing organization which places chaplains/ministers in RV resorts throughout the country. It is still hot here in S Texas, but the mornings and late evenings are getting cooler. This morning was lovely – a cool breeze and no humidity. We again saw Mama whistler duck on our side of the lake with her 4 babies, basking in the morning sun.  Last week as we went out the door to go to church, I heard a bit of commotion next door – Mama and her ducklings were resting under the steps of the trailer next door.  I guess we startled them as they waddled very quickly towards the lake, stopped and looked at us as if to say “why did you disturb us”?  Such small pleasures that God has provided for us to give Him praises for.

The next big distribution in the colonias is coming up in a few weeks.  We will be able to (through the generosity of all of you) provide enough school supplies for all the kiddos heading back to school.  We also have a generous supply of beans and rice, canned goods and clothing to serve all of those who attend from the surrounding colonias. Last year we had over 400 attending – what a blessing that God provided enough for them all. It is going to be a great day with gospel music, a wonderful meal, and smiles for everyone.

We are patiently waiting to have our shower replaced tomorrow – we have had this project on the agenda for a while but our handyman has been very busy. I am looking forward to not having to crawl over the side of the tub to take a shower, but certainly not looking forward to the mess. I do not like upheaval at all. Add to that the fact that I have a pipe phobia (yes there is such a thing – no name for it as it is particularly rare) and do not want to see any pipes showing anywhere during the process. Our youngest daughter has the same condition coupled with the phobia of strange bathrooms. It is said that it is genetic.

This morning Pastor Robert continued his sermon series on reclaiming clichés. Have you ever heard,” let God and let go”? We often say this when things are not going so well for us like relationship, family, or financial issues. Are we getting in God’s way?  Let go and let God seems to sell God and our faith short. Does the Bible really say let go and let God? John 15:1-8 seems to point that way. Verse 5 indicates that we can do nothing without the Lord. This verse is taken out of context. Life in Christ is demanding - He is going to push us in the direction that He wats us to go. Referring to the Scripture for today, He is pushing us to produce fruit. Life in Christ is also difficult because it is difficult to meet the expectations that He has set for us. We are human – we fail because we encounter struggles. Life in Christ is also a duel partnership. He is a part of our life just as we are a part of His. If we remain in Christ, He will remain in us. Let God and hold on – not let God and let go!!!

Hot and Humid

The weather here has been very hot and humid, especially if a person has to work outside in it. We usually try to get things done in the morning and do inside chores in the afternoon. It seems to get the hottest here around 5 PM.  In retrospect when we were living up North the hottest part of the day was noon or shortly after. This week we had plenty of indoor activities to keep us busy. After receiving 2040# of rice last week, we spent the week bagging it all in 3# bags in preparation of the big distribution in August. It is a tedious but very relaxing job. And we have 2 amazing ladies who help us out with the project.

We recently were in Arkansas and had the opportunity to have a 4 generation picture taken with our daughter Chandra, , grand daughter Sydney, and great granddaughter Harper when we were at Harper's 1st birthday. It does not seem like a year has already passed since she was born, but I am sure her mother feels like it has been years!

We took a quick trip to Mexico this week to pick up a few items - it was even hotter there although we went early in the morning. It seems as if the prices have increased in Mexico  just as they have everywhere else. There were plenty of folks shopping - they too were intent on getting this job done and back where it was cooler. There is a great fruit/vegetable stand just as a person crosses the border on the American side where we usually stop. We picked up some cold water, some Roma tomatoes and a couple of mangoes. Total bill was just $3. God has so blessed us by allowing us to be called to a place where fresh produce is so reasonable and easily available.

We had the pleasure of listening to the youth group sing at church this morning. The talent that the 4 kids have was unbelievable as they sang from their hearts, praising the Lord in worship.

Pastor Robert's new sermon series on reclaiming cliches focused on the saying "Hate the sin, love the sinner". How many times do we say this not realizing that it really is not what God meant. A lot of people think Christians are hypocrites. Actually the aforementioned saying is the heart of hypocrisy. We call those folks sinners, but they are really children of God. Does the Bible really say hate the sin, love the sinners? Read John 8:1-11  about the adulterous woman to get the true meaning. People make mistakes but in our minds mistakes make the person - if the person lied, cheated, or stole, we put them in a category in our mind, forgetting who they are today and not who they were. We label them. We tend to forget that people do make mistakes, even us. Yes, we do make mistakes and our mistakes are no bigger or smaller than those others make. We justify our mistakes against those of others that we think are worse. We preach grace but seem to give out judgment. What does God call us to do?? Love others. We take Jesus' expectations of those who follow Him and judge others by those expectations. Love people, love people, love people, and hate sin. God's grace is bigger than our sin.

Graduation

This past week was a huge one for CHI and the refuge in Reynosa (RIN). The kids in the elementary school (which is on the compound) including those from the neighboring area who pay to attend the Christian school graduated along with those in the special classes were honored in a special ceremony. The special classes are for those who for some reason cannot function in a school setting - either they had never gone to school at an early age, or have a slight physical or mental deficiency. It is a great accomplishment for them also so it is fitting that they should also be recognized. One of the girls we sponsor, Belinda, graduated from the special classes. She really worked hard and accomplished a difficult goal for herself. Later on in the day another ceremony was for the kids who attend classes in the public sector - junior high, high school, and college. We were not able to attend that ceremony as it required a over night stay in Reynosa and we had made prior commitments. So we attended the afternoon ceremony with a few others and drove back across the border while some others stayed for the later one.  We delivered the van to the office on the American side, then Randall, the director, was ready to load up a few few other and headed back for the evening ceremony. We were so sorry to miss that one as Pati, the other sweetheart that we sponsor, was honored as a high school graduate and will be attending college next fall.

We were outside today checking the cactus plant which is ready to bloom and noticed a bird's nest in the middle of it. How in the world did a bird get through all those prickers to build a nest??? It certainly was protected. God certainly created amazing creatures. We also checked the turtle eggs - yep - just as we suspected - all that was left was a small hole in the ground.

We were prying for rice because we are out of rice and another large distribution is scheduled for August. Fred called a man who has supplied rice in the past and was told that yes indeed he had some rice for him. Little did we know that he had 2040# for us - all in 50# bags. Because of the two special ladies who help us bag the rice, we only have about 600# left to go. God always seems to know what we need before we even ask Him - and then He provides!!!

Church services were different this morning as the praise band sang some less exuberant songs, still they were just what we needed to bring us into the sermon. What are you holding back?? Sacrificial giving is a joyful ouch! We joyful give - of our time, talents, and money, but it is an ouch as we cut back on other things in order to do so. What happens when God tells you to give up something? Does God demand too much of you?? Why did Godask so much of Abraham? Genesis 22:1-14. Why did Abraham listen? God gives us everything - but He knows that when He asks us for everything He expects us to give it to Him. . He seldom asks for human life, so why did He ask Abraham to kill His son?? We get lost in God's blessings and forget the obedience to follow Him. God wanted Abraham to love Him more than Abraham loved his son. God needed to know if Abraham was holding back. He deserves to be our everything and wants us never to hold back, Being a jealous God, He wants all of you. He knows who and what we are, so trust Him. He will not ask too much of you.

As we go through the hot days of summer, take time to dream of the lovely fall days - cool evenings and glorious colors. But do take time to enjoy the heat - let it warm your bones and be thankful.

Alamo Texas

We finally arrived safely home (thanks for all the prayers for travel mercies) on Friday - it was such a relief to find everything fine and in order. After just putting away all of the meat we  processed while in Arkansas, we just stepped back and worked slowly at putting things away (did not finish until Saturday). We did have to stop at the store for breakfast groceries, but did no more than that.

We spent the past week at the Gee's in Joshua, Texas - not really doing anything special but just sort of relaxing before our trip back to Alamo. It seems that as we get older, the drive seems to get longer!! The entire family is so loving and accepting - we spent Monday at their daughter Michelle's home - just sitting by the pool, watching the kids and grand kids swim and enjoy the pool, while sipping  wonderful refreshing cooler of bananas, strawberries, and sprite. So very good and just hit the spot on a hot day. Their son-in-law, Alan, grilled supper, along with all sorts of wonderful sides. That evening we went to the fireworks in Joshua, a small town type display, but with all the ohhs and ahhs of a larger city. People everywhere are proud of the USA in the same way. Tuesday was another day of swimming and grilling, again with wonderful food and company.

It was so good to be back in our Texas church - it seems that wherever we attend services we are so very blessed to have great ministers with a wonderful message. Pastor Robert was ordained while we were gone - a great achievement for an amazing man of God. His message this morning was based on temptations which seem to strike at the worst time like at 10 PM and the urge for big bowl of ice cream. Do we decide what we want - can we create will or desire?? We can make a decision to rule over temptation. We never actually decide to want what is bad for us but we do so because we are broken. We are in sin which is the absence of perfection. Sin is a separation from God. Read today's Scripture: Romans 7:15-25. Read it slowly so you can absorb it's meaning. Sin is  reality - it is our basic desires which are bad for us - why - because we are indeed broken. The desire to do better is God's work in our life. Sin with Jesus in the picture has lost. Think about this - fleeing from sin is fleeing towards holiness. The potential for evil is always there but God's grace is greater than brokenness.

Live each day for all it is worth - don't worry about yesterday which is already gone  or tomorrow which is not here yet.

The Final Stretch

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.--Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.
He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.
He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.
He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences
For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:
For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.
He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to complete the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavored to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.
We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

This is what many men and women have given their lives for - so that we can be assured of these freedoms.






As of tomorrow we are making the almost final stretch of our 2 month vacation/mission trip. It has been a busy week with visiting those we planned on seeing but seemed to put off until the last minute. The time seems to just fly and when we think we have time to schedule something, it is almost too late. The weather has been beautiful, except for a thunderstorm or two. We plan on stopping at Chaplain Roy and Paula Gee's in Joshua, Texas for a short visit, then be "home" sometime during the week. We will miss our family here in Arknss as well a in Wisconsin, but the Lord seems to be calling us back to serve others. We can do that here as well, so when the Lord sys we need to come back to Arkansas, we will  do so. Just pray that we are open to His Word and follow His will.

There was a lot of excitemwnt in Praire Grive this week as a 1,000,000# transformer load was being transported to it's permanent loction. It took two days to travel, often stopping to add more axles and wheels to accommodate the roads and bridges. The load was parked overnight in just outside of Prairie Grove about half way through the trip. It was interesting to see all the cars parked along the highway waiting to get a glimpse of this huge transformer and the manpower needed to move it.

Sturday we had a family get together - children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Not everyone was able to be here but we enjoyed all of the time we were abe to spend with those who were. I did not get a picture of the twins, as most of the kiddos were in and out of the pool, dry, wet, dry, wet, etc. We ate the previously smoked ham and chicken, which was extremely wonderful, and a potato salad which our daughter made. I HATE potato salad - but I tasted it and it was wonderful! I even ate the leftovers today.

Our Senior Pastor Vance Ubanks is on a 6 week sabbatical, so our sermon this morning was presented by our associate minister Andrew Kirscher. It is interesting to note that he was a college professor and an atheist, but now believes!!! An amazing intelligent young man (well, anyone younger than we are is young). In the time of Jesus, people did not believe that He was from God but of the devil. When Jesus cured the mute man, people believed that it was the devil who drove out the demons - this does not  make sense. Why would the devil drive the devil demons out of someone?? It was believed that a possessed person had to name the demon he was possessed by in order to be rid of it - how could a mute man speak?? If you read verse 17 of Luke 11 it describes our country today - especially important to understand this Independence week-end. Jesus is stronger than evil, Jesus has greater wisdom and worked more miracles than the devil. Embrace the kingdom of God, seek first His kingdom, let His light shine in you, and tell others what He has done for you.
