Twice Thankful

We were blessed this week to be able to celebrate Thanksgiving twice. Last Sunday evening we attend the Harvest Fest at Great Oaks Community Church which was also the food distribution night for the food pantry. The Harvest Fest was for  members of the congregation as well as a community outreach program. There were many folks  who enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving meal (perhaps the only full meal that they have had in quite awhile). After a short time of fellowship, the meal was served, followed by a short time of song and testimonies.

I asked if I could take their picture, and immediately the ladies began smoothing their hair in place

We are again collecting the small canned hams this year for Christmas. Many of these people do not have a stove or even a can opener, so the hams with the pull tabs can be easily opened and put on the grill, which is always available somewhere in the colonias. Last year we collected over 100 hams and fed over 50 families for Christmas.

After a busy beginning of the week with meetings and commitments, we prepared for the Thanksgiving dinner here at the park. Fred made his ever famous cranberries and I made a fruit salad as our contribution to the feast. Our table was filled with tantalizing fragrances as we sat down with friends to share together this day of giving thanks to the Lord for His provision. Let us make a habit of rising every morning with "Thank you, Lord for another day" as the first thing we say.

we usually have some sort of entertainment after the meal before we return to our homes for a much needed nap - "Ruthie" is a local gal with a lovey voice

Poinsettia's are native to Mexico and grow very well here in South Texas. A neighbor has planted one from a few Christmas' ago ( we put them on stage for our Christmas church services) and it has boomed steadily all summer. Actually, the blossoms are only the green leaves which turn red.

It is indeed looking a lot like Christmas, as we started putting up a few decorations. Need to take a couple more days to finish though. The first thing we brought out after putting up our tiny tree was the manger scene that is one of my most treasured possessions. As I set each figure in pace, I try to imagine the feelings of each one of them - Mary who was chosen above all others to bring the Savior into the world, Joseph who, by faith, stayed at Mary's side as gave birth to the Baby Jesus, the angels who proclaimed His birth, the shepherds who were the first to come and adore Him, the sheep who lovingly followed their shepherds without fear, the Wise men, who also by faith followed the star for many days and nights, the lowly animals in the manger who too were awed by the amazing miracle that Christmas night. The park has decorated the hall, including the beautiful lighted tree on stage, reminding us of the everlasting love of the Lord, the lights reminding us that Jesus is the light of the word. O Come let us, too, adore Him.

I have started an online Ladies Bible Study entitled "Keeping Our Hearts Focused on Jesus", which is sponsored by our home church in Arkansas. It makes my heart happy to know that I can be connected with our friends through a study, which we will all share together. Pray that I continue to be committed to follow through daily. There are so many distractions in our lives that keep us from taking the time to read His Word, worldly things that are not so really that important, speed bumps in the road, ripples in the water that become tidal waves if we let them. Let us continue to enjoy this glorious Christmas season with love and forgiveness.
